Zululand is truly any bird lover's paradise! The verity of vegetation and different regions, joining hands, makes Zeekoepan one of the best areas to visit if you would like to experience Birdlife in abundance. With over 300 different bird species, calling Zululand home, there will be no disappointment! Situated in the heart of the extensive Bushveld biome of Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal, rivers lined with forests, raging mountains and deep valleys, home to the Big 5 and other dangerous game roaming freely on our pride lands. Lowveld Bushveld, the only example of this in the province, supports a vast array of species, including some that are rare in other parts of Zululand. These include Burchell's Starling, Bennett's Woodpecker, Levaillant's Cuckoo, Purple Roller, Magpie Shrike and Red-headed Weaver.

 

Sharing the area with predators such as Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, Hyena and other small scavengers, raptors are plentiful, with over 10 species of eagles and a multiple of Vulture species being recorded. These special birds include Osprey, African Fish-Eagle, Peregrine Falcon , Lappet-faced Vulture, Bateleur, Martial and Tawney eagle, White backed Vulture and many more.

Bushveld birdlife include everything from the tall standing Secretary to the stocky Natal Francolin. Black-bellied Korhaan, Bronze-winged Courser, Bearded Woodpecker, Flappet Lark, Red-billed Oxpecker, Scarlet-chested Sunbird and Red-headed Weaver, only mentioning a few, are often photographed.

The forested areas can produce Narina Trogon, Rudd's Apalis, Eastern Nicator, Gorgeous Bush Shrike, Red-capped Robin-Chat, African Green Pigeon, Purple-crested Turaco, Crested Guineafowl. River valley sightings include Yellow-billed Stork, Black-crowned Night-Heron, Fulvous and White-faced Duck, African Jacana and even Black Coucal and Rufous-bellied Heron.

 

Grab your camera and binoculars, visit a place of magnificence. Get back to nature and get addicted to the calmness and relaxing sounds of the African bush. Relax by the campfire, sharing stories and pictures of rare sightings while listening to the roaring of a male lion, kindly reminding us of our vulnerability while sharing his pride lands.
