Lowveld Bushveld, the only example of this in the province, supports a vast array of species, including some that are rare in other parts of Zululand. These include Burchell's Starling, Bennett's Woodpecker, Levaillant's Cuckoo, Purple Roller, Magpie Shrike and Red-headed Weaver.

 

Sharing the area with predators such as Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, Hyena and other small scavengers, raptors are plentiful, with over 10 species of eagles and a multiple of Vulture species being recorded. These special birds include Osprey, African Fish-Eagle, Peregrine Falcon , Lappet-faced Vulture, Bateleur, Martial and Tawney eagle, White backed Vulture and many more.

Bushveld birdlife include everything from the tall standing Secretary to the stocky Natal Francolin. Black-bellied Korhaan, Bronze-winged Courser, Bearded Woodpecker, Flappet Lark, Red-billed Oxpecker, Scarlet-chested Sunbird and Red-headed Weaver, only mentioning a few, are often photographed.

The forested areas can produce Narina Trogon, Rudd's Apalis, Eastern Nicator, Gorgeous Bush Shrike, Red-capped Robin-Chat, African Green Pigeon, Purple-crested Turaco, Crested Guineafowl. River valley sightings include Yellow-billed Stork, Black-crowned Night-Heron, Fulvous and White-faced Duck, African Jacana and even Black Coucal and Rufous-bellied Heron.
